Hi! Nice to see that someone finally got started on an English version. We didn't get around to finalize one in the past years. 😄

So, I got a few very high-level questions/notes/nitpicks, if you don't mind:

  • Who is the target audience of the English Version? Master first semester students? If so, I would suppose that a solid 50-60 % of the contents of the Manual are not applicable to them, as they surely know how studying works in general and how module descriptions are intended to be read. We tried compiling some bullet points for such a specifically tailored manual in this repo, but never really wrote it. Having an English version for the Bachelor's students is surely nice, but probably won't be read by a lot of people since all Bachelor's courses of study are in German anyway.
  • How come the English version will be distributed as ePUB? Is there a specific reason to choose that over PDF?
  • Please don't duplicate all images and boilerplate TeX. 🙈 The repo already takes a long time to clone due to some huge images in the commit history, no need to bloat the history further 😅
  • Please don't push compilation artifacts (i.e., the finished ePUB) in the working tree. They will otherwise be updated very often by accident, bloating the commit history, cause merge conflicts, and make the repo size explode over time. It's better to gitignore such files alltogether. Once a year, when the new books are printed/uploaded, we instead draft a release. 🙂

That's just my 2 ct so far from having a super quick glance over your work so far.

  • the target audience are primarily master first semester students
  • this version is meant to be accessed only digitally and on mobile devices which makes ePUB a better fit
  • all images are resized versions; much smaller than the originals; the final ePUB is less than 5mb and hence suitable for email
  • also the tex files are new and not copies; they share the same file name -- but that's about it
  • the manual.epub is already in the .gitignore; the particular patch that adds this file to the repository can be ignored

We have uploaded the new version. All new material is in a separate folder "epub". The final epub produced with these files is available at https://github.com/mpodhaisky/nopanic/releases/download/epub2022/manual.epub

It would be nice if that can be merged as otherwise the work spent on it will be lost eventually.
