Umbrel is an excellent choice for a home server, known for its user-friendly interface and extensive app ecosystem. It provides a seamless experience for beginners and advanced users alike, making it easy to deploy and manage various services. However, one significant area where Umbrel falls short is in its backup, restore, and recovery capabilities. The current solutions are not as comprehensive, often requiring manual intervention, which can lead to data loss during recovery processes.

In contrast, Start9 offers robust, integrated tools for backup and recovery, ensuring that users can restore their data quickly and efficiently without the risk of losing important information. This feature significantly enhances the reliability and user experience, making Start9 a standout choice for users who prioritize data integrity and hassle-free recovery.

To further elevate its service and maintain competitive edge, Umbrel could greatly benefit from implementing a backup and restore feature similar to that of Start9. Such an enhancement would not only fortify data security but also simplify the overall maintenance, making Umbrel an even more compelling choice for home server enthusiasts.

I would like to change my private solution for file storage because I am more comfortable with Nextcloud, and using Immich with Umbrel OS could lead me to migrate my data from Synology to UmbrelOS. The only thing that does not lead me to do so is a backup/restore solution.
at the moment the only solution would be to use "duplicates" and copy everything to a server.. Let me know if there are other solutions!

I share your thoughts to the fullest!

There is a discussion open on the forum where someone from the umbrel team said that they are working on an official backup solution.
Also someone posted a guide on how to perform backups using duplicati (from a community apps-store): https://community.umbrel.com/t/how-can-i-backup-my-umbrel-node/13737
