I have tried:

jpegoptim * -m50 --dest="/media/swap/pictures-compressed/family-jakobson"

and without quotes.. a bit of help?

I don't know if you still need help, but I ran into this problem now and found this issue, so I'll leave the solution here for posterity. The argument for --dest has to be an existing directory, not a filename.
