# Watching for Changes to a Nested Object
Shows how to use an **observe block** for observing a nested property
for changes.
An observe block defines a mapping between one or
more properties and an observer,
and it should be used for watching changes to nested objects.
In this sample, the the `thing.color` property is mapped to a handler
inside an `observe` block:
Polymer('my-element', {
message: '',
created: function() {
this.thing = {
color: 'red'
};
},
observe: {
'thing.color': 'colorObserver',
},
colorObserver: function(oldValue, newValue) {
this.message = 'Color changed from ' + oldValue + ' to ' + newValue;
},
...
});
Every time the value of `thing.color` changes, the `colorObserver()` handler
fires.
Read the
[official documentation for observe blocks](http://www.polymer-project.org/docs/polymer/polymer.html#observeblock).
