"value": "The initiative to provide free menstrual products and contraceptives in residence halls follows a <a href=\"https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ccantI6Vplnp8-yxkU1ztn2AvFtMzfbygoUxuTpJrGU/edit?tab=t.0\">pilot program</a> launched last spring by Bethamcherla with support from The Pad Project. The four-week trial offered these supplies in laundry rooms in Carman Hall, McBain Hall, Wien Hall, and East Campus, indicating high demand."

"value": "Adding the referendum to the ballot was partly in response to the administration’s request for concrete data on student interest in the initiative. According to Hernandez, the data will provide a stronger basis for advocating the program’s expansion and help move the initiative forward with clearer administrative support."

"value": "Hernandez and Bethamcherla were asked by administrators to survey students about two separate questions—one about the need for menstrual products and another about contraceptives—as opposed to one question that encompassed both concerns. There was a 5 percent difference in support levels between menstrual and contraceptive products in the referendum results."

"value": "However, both Bethamcherla and Hernandez said they do not believe it will alter the program’s direction."

"value": "“I feel like a five-point difference really doesn’t make much of a difference when both of them demonstrate a supermajority of interest or supermajority of desire to have these products,” Bethamcherla said."

"value": "Hernandez said that a part of their strategy in early discussions with administrators was to highlight programs that exist at peer institutions. Hernandez organized a meeting with Harvard University’s Residential Facilities and Operations Department, where he learned about the structure and partnerships that contributed to the program’s success."

"value": "He said the department told him that they partner with a third-party supplier to maintain consistent availability of products and meet directly with custodial staff to communicate the initiative’s purpose."

"value": "Working directly with the custodial staff allows “the people that are actually responsible for carrying it out on a day-to-day basis [to] know the reasoning and the importance behind the initiative,” making the initiative less “removed” and contributing to a smoother rollout, Hernandez said."

"value": "Bethamcherla and Hernandez expressed optimism that the referendum results will bolster their advocacy efforts for establishing a “long-term” infrastructure for free menstrual products and contraceptives in residence halls in meetings with administrators."

"value": "They plan to meet with administrators from Housing and Campus Services this week to discuss next steps—addressing peer institutions’ programs, communicating CCSC sentiments, and presenting a more detailed pitch for their initiative."
