Description of what took place

During this UX interview the user (John Darrag) was asked to do the following tasks to test for usability:

  1. Explore the site and create charts that shows homeless encampments in the east and Central Hollywood Neighborhood Council from July 6th through 12th of 2020. (Testing the filter feature and the "data visualization" tab)

  2. Keeping the same criteria, use the map and see if you can visually identify which street had the most homeless encampment requests in either central or east hollywood (looking at the zoom function, map, the clusters)

The user was also asked questions that pertained to color blindness, suggested improvements, and overall usability. During the interview the user also had the opportunity to explore a version of the platform created by the Dev team, exploring the map feature.

Problems Encountered

  1. When selecting the dates, John clicked on the calendar icon instead of the dates, so nothing happened (both places should be clickable)
  2. He, too, did not notice the submit button
  3. Did not understand the line graph
  4. Did not understand why the line graph (frequencies) was a repeat of the bar graph (total request)
  5. Current colors are semi hard to see; however, the colorblindness choices was even harder to differentiate
  6. Was confused why there are different with the same color clusters in the same region
  7. Was confused by the highlighting of the regions/NCs, expected only regions in filter criteria would be highlighted
  8. Noticed when he zooms in and out, the pins moves
  9. User is red-green color blind and had difficulty differentiate dots when all request types were selected with the new WCAG compliant colors (did mention that he wouldn't ever look at all request types at once)
  10. The map and data button on new design is confusing
  11. The graph on the top right was also confusing, not sure why you need it

What Worked/Was Helpful

  1. The acronyms near the request types were helpful to identify request types when colors were hard to differentiate
  2. The filter bar on the left with all the request types acted as a legend the user could reference while looking at charts
  3. Preferred the design of the dots over the pin markers

New Feature Suggestions

  1. Have maps auto-zoom into the area/s selected in the filter criteria

UX Process Improvement Suggestions

  • Limiting the address finder to only the neighborhoods within the councils
  • Remove submit button and have filters work in real time
  • Use different icon shapes for the request types, rather than having all circles, and have the points on charts show the icon shape relative to the request type
