A recent review of spam on the website has led to an insight: having a freeform "description" text field on profile pages is a bad idea and should be removed. The issues:
The content doesn't have a context as it's not linked to the user's activity on the website. Regular users have no nudge to post content.
Consequently, the field is mainly appealing to those actively interested in making profile pages that point to their business interests, and these are spammers.
The content is always stale as there's no organic update to it.
This also applies to the banner image on the profile page. Regular users don't have content to post there. Professional profile makers do, and they're almost always spammers.
There is a genuine need for a profile description and banner for a brand landing page, but as these are a small minority, they should be explicitly approved. The default should be no description and banner. (Maybe even the website link should be subject to some criteria.)
