Geographic information systems (GIS) are coordinate-based datasets used for mapping things. One of the main things you'll need to worry about when working with GIS data is the curvature of the Earth - i.e. standardizing your projections. There are two softwares which can be used for GIS data analysis: ArcGIS (Windows only; needs a license) and QGIS (Mac/Windows; open source).

For basic map-making and GIS analysis (e.g. calculating distances, etc.), QGIS is probably sufficient. If you're working in a university setting, you might have access to an ArcGIS license. Both can be easily automated with Python.

git
is a very simple programming language for version control, run from the command line. GitHub is a popular website where you can use
git
to collaborate with others on code-based projects. It's basically
git
+ the internet. Your code is hosted in online repositories ("repos") which can be public (free) or private (not free). You normally don't store data, Word documents, or other stuff on GitHub. It works best with plain text files.
