Sometimes I find that macOS updates aren't available if I'm on my VPN. Then I switch to a different network and it finds the updates just fine. Make sure you are off of any VPN and maybe try a different Wi-Fi connection. Also make sure in Virtual Machine Settings that Network is set to NAT. |

It only works with a Sequoia 15 host and guest, so will not work if using Sonoma on the host. I can't quite see if it would also need code changes but Howard Oakley thinks that is also likely. https://eclecticlight.co/2024/06/17/how-sequoia-changes-virtualisation-on-apple-silicon/ |

Any Xcode beta? A particular Xcode beta? I ask because I'm on Ventura but Apple Support wants me to test a Ventura issue on the Sequoia beta. Xcode 16 beta 1 requires Sonoma. |

It has to be Xcode 16, so in your situation I don't think you'll be able to test it. |

I downloaded the Xcode 16 beta .xip on Ventura, expanded it, extracted the MobileDevice.pkg, double-click to run it. This worked. That is, while the Xcode 16 beta doesn't run on Ventura, the included MobileDevice installer does. Note: For future reference, I think the requirement is you need the Xcode version that was released at the same time (or later) as the macOS you're trying to install. So for the Sequoia beta, you need the Xcode that was released at the same WWDC, since that's the only new version. |

Yes, what you actually need are the device support files that come packaged with the Xcode version that shipped with that beta OS version, which is what you got when you manually extracted that package. Glad to know there's a workaround 🙌🏻 |

Update: device support files are now available as a separate download, so installing Xcode 16 is no longer required. As mentioned by @DrDonk here, unfortunately a package that Xcode installs is required in order to manage devices running the beta OSes in a previous release, and the same goes for virtual machines because they use the same communication protocol with the host as an external device like an iPhone or iPad would use. Last year, Apple made this package available as a separate download, but I couldn't find a new one for this year on the dev portal, let's hope they make that available soon. |

This is interesting: the separate download is 248.5 MB, but the package extracted from the Xcode 16 beta is only 13.3 MB. The reason is the DeviceSupport.pkg in the separate download contains two packages: the same 33.4 MB MobileDevice package as in the Xcode beta, plus a 234.3 MB CoreTypes package, which contains /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle. Does this mean that when we jump the gun and use an Xcode beta to get the beta MobileDevice, we should also install CoreTypes.pkg? In the beta it is at the same location: Xcode-beta/Contents/Resources/Packages/CoreTypes.pkg. |

I don't think the CoreTypes update is necessary for the operation of VMs. CoreTypes includes things such as device icons for new device models, so that Finder can display the correct icon in the sidebar, for example. I think it's included as part of the device support download because it's the same type of update that's shipped with the newer OS. |
