Just a heads-up: I have implemented the penalized synthetic control method in an R package here. My idea was to create a very simple but accessible version for others to implement this method in their research. I refer back to your work and to this repository as well.
It currently works for only a single treated unit (but of course you can run it several times for multiple treated units), but it has rudimentary cross-validation, some useful plots, and a (hopefully) legible codebase. Feel free to take a look and try it out!
