Usage of switch ?

I am trying to use switch to have this behavior:
When I use "ralt" then the key X will print 1, otherwise will print 2.

I tried all of the following cases, but none of them work. No matter if I press or how I press ralt, the output is always 4.

I am pretty sure I am not grasping the idea -- how should it be done properly?

Here is my configuration:

    tfk (switch
      ((key-history ralt 1)) 1 break
      ((input real ralt)) 2 break
      (ralt) 3 break
      () 4 break
    )

Is ralt in your defsrc or otherwise do you have process-unmapped-keys yes in defcfg?

Right that was it!
I didn't knew that the key should have been in defsrc.

Maybe this valuable information should be put in the documentation, more clearly?

It's mentioned in various places in the doc. If you can mention where you specifically thought to look or where you think it would be valuable, it could be added in more places.

is it possible to add a "[WARN] possible use of u..." warning at kanata startup if the configuration seems to interact with unmapped keys

My own config looks like this - though I would call it a tricky concept.
process-unmapped-keys yes ;; WHY yes? yes does not help with japanese keys ; did not help with RDP sticky keys; maybe because of dynamic-macros?

Maybe process-unmapped-keys yes should be the default, just because it is easier to tell somebody when to disable it. (is it easier?)

The reason I was confused is because in a setup like this

   tfk (switch
      (1) 2 break
      () 3 break
    )

the 1 needs to be defined, but 2 & 3 not. If this didn't work at all, maybe I had to rethink what I did wrong. But given that I could safely remap to 3, this confused me.

I believe the solution that @gerhard-h mentioned would be the best. When I looked at the log file and it said that the file was read successfully, I was even more confused. And I also want to say, that I've read the documentation file a dozen of times, from start to end, to find solutions and tricks that would be useful.
