Cars rely on collision only to make it through an intersection. There's nothing equivalent to turn lights for cars to anticipate where other cars are going. Once the pathfinding covers more than one cell/tile at a time, it's possible to make more realistic predictions and give priority to one of the currently gridlocking cars.
