Installation procedures. Any questions or bug reports can be directed

To install under any account, cd to the src directory and type './configure'.
After you have specified both system configuration settings and TinyMARE
environment, compile the program using 'make' and then copy it into the bin
directory provided by typing 'make install' in the src directory.
To operate the server, change to the src directory and run the shell script
called 'bootmare'. If you are upgrading an existing database, be sure to have
your database located in the file 'run/db/mdb' before starting. All error logs
will be reported in the 'run/logs' directory. If you wish to start up the
netmare program without the use of the 'bootmare' script, you may do the
following steps:
1. Cd to the run directory. Apart from all compiling and when not using the
'bootmare' script, this is the directory you'll want to be when you run
TinyMARE programs.
2. If you would like to use the watchdog 'wd' program, cd to the 'src/util'
directory and type 'make wd'. Copy wd to the 'bin' directory. Then cd to
the run directory (as in #1 above) and type '../bin/wd' instead of
'../bin/netmare'. Arguments are the same for both programs.
Usage: netmare [-frsv] [-d|-t file] [port]
Arguments:
-f Forces database loading even when there are combat settings stored
in the database. This is required only when TinyMARE has been
compiled without Combat System support.
-r Loads the database in read-only mode. Database saves will not occur
and using the @dump command will result in an error message.
-s Disables @startups from being executed when the game begins. Useful
for running old archive databases without actually turning on the
softcode. The program must be restarted without the -s flag to
turn startups back on, instead of using @reboot.
-v Displays version of TinyMARE and exits. If this reports that the
version is unknown, you are executing this program from the wrong
runtime directory.
-d file
Specifies the database file to use to load and save the objects
created on the MARE. Normally, this defaults to 'run/db/mdb'.
-t file
Test-loads a database file. This option will not actually run the
game server, but it will instead just load the database and print
its contents to standard-output.
port
A port other than the one compiled at configuration time can also
be specified, useful if you are running more than one server at
once.
Netmare only uses the data found in the current 'run' directory to operate
the server. If you wish to run more than one server at a time, you must
execute '../bin/netmare' from a separate runtime directory. The simplest
way to start a new Mare is to copy the contents of the 'run' directory
to another name perhaps symbolic of the name of the new game, and run
'../bin/netmare' from there.
To clean up all unnecessary files when finished, type 'make clean' in the
src directory.

1. The Initial Test Database
Running TinyMARE the first time without a database file in place, the game
will automatically initialize a new database with one object: Limbo(#0R).
The first person to log into the game and create a new character will
automatically become the God of the realm with a database reference number
of #1, indicating full Wizard status above all other players in the game.
Please note: this version of TinyMARE requires you to log in through
"localhost" to create the first character. You will be denied access if you
telnet in from another site or if you specify the hostname of your computer
instead of "localhost".
2. Softcoding TinyMARE
The new online helptext (in HTML format) comes equipped with various
topics on programming and administrating your MARE. For a list of technical
softcoding commands, type 'help wizard' once you connect fully to the game.
'help topics' also displays some key information on various parts of the
game. Wizards may use the @config command to change environment variables
while the game is actively running.

Upgrading from a Previous Version of TinyMare:
---------------------
1. Preserving the Database
TinyMARE databases are backward compatible since its first public release,
v1.0.6812. However, since the initial version, the index numbers of a few key
environment configuration variables may have changed to make room for new
variables that give more features or greater functionality. To ensure that
your @config variables are correctly set, log the output of the '@list config'
command before and after the upgrade, and set the values of those variables
that have unexpectedly changed.
2. @Rebooting from a Previous Version
It is likely that the save-state files that one version of TinyMare creates
is completely incompatible with the newer version. This results in @reboots
that completely knock everyone off of the game, rather than keep everyone
online. If this is the case, the game forces a hard reset and boots up normally
as if turned on for the first time. No damage occurs to the game or players
online during this phase, and players can relog freely back into the game.
3. Switching between Combat and Non-Combat Versions of TinyMare
Beginning with TinyMARE v1.0.7860, combat structures are only stored in the
database if TinyMare was compiled with Combat System support. Loading such a
database without Combat support will result in the loss of all combat settings,
player bitmaps, spells and equipment, town/chapter configurations, and all
other status variables related to combat.
The game will not permit a non-combat server to load a combat database by
default. A message will be printed to log_main indicating that the -f flag
must be used to override the protection and continue loading the database.
When switching to the Combat version of TinyMare with a non-combat database
for the first time, TinyMare will automatically create the default technique
'Fight' as spell #0 and initialize all other combat structures for each player.
No further configuration options are required.
