We want filtering as a feature, but we want it happen in an organic, integrated way.
People's profiles should contain not just their information, but your public and private feelings toward them, including whether their talks are by default collapsed or even filtered / blocked.
Trends, topics, labels, tags, keywords—whatever you want to call this feature, it should also have a management UI, peer to the people UI, where you can create topics, edit their display, make smart lists, and filtering / blocking.
In addition to these panels, you should be able to edit things in place by, for example, selecting a phone number and adding to that person's profile, which updates your system address book at the same time.
You should be tap a person's avatar to get to their profile, but you should also be able to long press a person's avatar to take actions, such as blocking them, permanently or for some time period, or putting their talk in a permanently collapsed or expanded state.
