In case anyone wants to view how things were for historical purposes or curiosity. Probably only possible by the owner of the old wiki, celeron55

  • All data necessary to view how the wiki was before it was taken down
  • Quick instructions, even as simple as "Load this into a local MediaWiki instance" so folks know how to get started
  • No advanced guide necessary for now, we can answer questions via chat if needed

Old forum? How old? Anyway, I think the wiki is different as it was official documentation, not a forum for discussions

The goal here is for folks to be able to access old wiki data if they want to, it feels weird for us to take down the old site while transferring data we thought valuable and burning data others might appreciate. Again, it should just be hosting a single zip on samsinventory and pointing to "How to setup MediaWiki". Not sure how hard it is to get a backup of MediaWiki data, that's the catch, of course.

the data burned was mostly just craft guides, etc.

Again, mostly. Plus there is the edit history, user pages, etc. I agree this is a low priority, but I do think it's something we should get around to before the data is gone forever, would be a shame to lose a years-old wiki history when it's relatively easy to preserve

At least the last snapshot of the wiki should be available as XML in https://github.com/rollerozxa/mt-wiki-dumping-ground/blob/master/raw-exports/Luanti%2BWiki-20241220214815.xml, which supposedly could be imported?

This is not something we can really get around to. Ultimately we don't have the data except for this dump (to my knowledge). I don't know how easy it is to preserve. I think celeron opted not to do further work on it after briefly estimating using access logs that the popularity of the MTG wiki content (which is essentially the only substantial kind of content beyond what was migrated) was very low: https://irc.luanti.org/minetest-docs/2025-01-31#i_6239130.

I do have a WIP Markdown form of the english MTG wiki content I consider worth preserving but it's still in a messy state.

My understanding per chats with @rollerozxa was that mt-wiki-dumping-ground was not a complete dataset. I know the only person who can do this is @celeron55, so pinging him here, hopefully he can follow Backing up a wiki guidance
