Weird.

$ DEFMT_LOG=trace make -f Makefile.dev m3

```

It downloads the firmware, but call to `vl.start_ranging(&c)` does not return.

Since this might not affect larger (non-ULD) use, leaving for now.

- [ ] check the VL module; is it faulty?
