I would try https://github.com/markusC64/1541ultimate2/releases
If this is not what you were looking for, chances are there is nothing newer available.

those are the normal firmware releases. I thought this repository was for an improved firmware...

Just take a closer look and scroll down, these are all releases.
If Gideon accepts a merge request, there is no need for an "improved" firmware.
