We may need to care about how close the API backend host (Digital Ocean or other) is to the ES cluster - speed of light being a thing. Probably not top priority but worth considering |

Maintaining our own ElasticSearch adds to our resource requirements (our servers have to be bigger to hold all of the data and host an ES Shard). Moving to hosted ElasticSearch removes the resource requirements from our own hardware (allowing for smaller system donations) and frees us from maintaining the cluster when things break (we've had a few instances where a shard has gone stale and caused lots of issues).
