• npm -> yarn (or not)
• gulp -> consider: webpack, parcel, rollup, pax
• CoffeeScript -> TypeScript, see "TypeScript With Babel: A Beautiful Marriage"
• nodemon for restarting the server
• update deps that remain, including socket.io
• consider a tiny API framework, e.g. feathers for API and choo for the client
• consider artillery for API testing

front-end

• underscore -> lodash or ramda
• backbone -> wolfy87-eventemitter or fbemitter
