<h4 class="faq__title">About the “Integrated Database Project”?</h4>

<p class="adelement__description adelement__description-faq">The “Integrated Database Project” was a five
year project (starting FY2006), funded by the Japanese <a href="http://www.mext.go.jp/english/"
target="_blank">Ministry of Education</a>, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), that aimed to
improve the accessibility and usability of life science databases in Japan. It was lead by DBCLS/ROIS
together with 15 other Japanese universities and institutions (For details of the participating
institutions click <a href="http://lifesciencedb.jp/?lng=en&pg=2"
target="_blank">here</a>).<br>Although the Project finished in Mar. 2011, project portal websites,
search systems and tools useful for life science research which had been developed are being maintained.
These are all available from the <a href="http://lifesciencedb.jp/?lng=en" target="_blank">LSDB home
page</a> (some of them which are now maintained by NBDC have auto-link to <a
href="http://biosciencedbc.jp/nbdc.cgi?lng=en&pg=0" target="_blank">NBDC website</a>).</p>

<p class="adelement__description adelement__description-faq">DBCLS does not develop primary databases
composed of experimental or observational data, but develops information technology and contents (e.g.
dictionaries) that improves the accessibility of life science databases.</p>

services is sold. They are publicly available for free of charge.</p>

<h4 class="faq__title">About the Database Center for Life Science (DBCLS)?</h4>

<p class="adelement__description adelement__description-faq">The Database Center for Life Science (DBCLS)
was established as a part of the Research Organization of Information and Systems (ROIS) in April 2007, to
function as a center of excellence in life science database integration (For more, visit “<a
href="/about.html" target="_blank">About Us</a>”). Since the fiscal year of 2006, ROIS had been a core
institution of the “Integrated Database Project” funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture,
Sports, Science and Technology which had been later (FY2007 to FY2010) carried out by DBCLS/ROIS together
with 15 other Japanese universities and research institutions (For details, read “<a
href="#article3">About the Integrated Database Project</a>”). Since the fiscal year of 2011 DBCLS/ROIS
has been appointed for “Program Concerning Technology Development for Database Integration” as a part of
the “<a href="http://biosciencedbc.jp/nbdc.cgi?lng=en&gg=projects_and_activities" target="_blank">Life
Science Database Integration Project</a>” conducted by <a
href="http://biosciencedbc.jp/nbdc.cgi?lng=en&pg=0" target="_blank">the National Bioscience Database
Center (NBDC)</a> / Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). While DBCLS is located in the Hongo
Campus, the University of Tokyo, it is an institution independent from the university.</p>

target="_blank">The Research Institution of Information and Systems (ROIS)</a> was established based on
the National University Corporation Act in 2004 and originally was a parent organization of four national
institutes (<a href="http://www.nii.ac.jp/en/" target="_blank">the National Institute of Informatics</a>,
<a href="http://www.nig.ac.jp/index-e.html" target="_blank">the National Institute of Genetics</a>, <a
href="http://www.nipr.ac.jp/english/index.html" target="_blank">the National Institute of Polar
Research</a>, and the <a href="http://www.ism.ac.jp/index_e.html" target="_blank">Institute of
Statistical Mathematics</a>). ROIS is one of the four Inter-University Institutes (the <a
href="http://www.nihu.jp/e/index.html" target="_blank">National Institutes of the Humanities</a>, the <a
href="http://www.kek.jp/intra-e/index.html" target="_blank">High Energy Accelerator Research
Organization</a>, and the <a href="http://www.nins.jp/english/index.html" target="_blank">National
Institutes of Natural Sciences</a>) that carries out collaborative research, as core research centers of
the Japanese <a href="http://www.mext.go.jp/english/" target="_blank">Ministry of Education, Culture,
Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT)</a>. The primary feature of the Inter-University Institutes is
that the facilities are open to use for researchers and students in and outside of Japan.
