Elasticsearch is 0.17.8.1 in grails repository, which is a one year old outdated release. Please, update it to latest version (0.19).

I see that there are recent commits, but no new plugin has been published since October 25, 2011.

Would you recommend forking this project and publishing it as a plugin under a different name.

It's not dead, the author is accepting merge request and integrating fixes
to the main branch. However, the plugin is not updated in grails plugins
repository.
