oversized legend is crowding the figure axes

When multiple dat files are selected the plot legend can become quite long and consume a large area of the plot axes. A separate axes or a different method for displaying the legend needs to be implemented.

• The plot axes should not shrink when the legend is displayed
• the plot data should not be hidden behind the legend
• long filenames need to be processed and replaced with a short, meaningful, description
