Linking an image not working

When a link is set on an image, the "a" tag gets removed after saving and is not rendered in the frontend. (Typo3 v12)
I know that this worked in version 11 of Typo3 and this extension.

Steps to reproduce
To reproduce the problem:

1. Add image to RTE field
2. Select the image and set a link (The link appears in the rte source)
3. Save
4. After reinspecting the source of the RTE the link is gone.
