Space bar swipe cursor movement behavior

A difference I've noticed coming from MessagEase is that swiping on the space bar moves the cursor with your finger rather than moving it one character per swipe. I like this change but it would be nice to have an easier way to move the cursor by one character--I was thinking a sufficiently fast swipe on the space bar would do the trick. Not sure what the details of that would be, but I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on the idea.
