The current definition of dental restoration material role is:

A functional prothetic role that is borne by a portion of dental restoration material and is realized in a tooth restoration procedure in which the restoration material becomes part of a restored tooth.

However, some dental restoration materials (such as glass ionomer) can be used in multiple ways:

  • as a material that replaces missing tooth structure
  • as a luting agent
  • as a base for another restoration material (e.g., amalgam restorations)

To address that we can expand the definition of dental restoration material to both include the material that replaces the tooth structure as well as the auxiliary materials (e.g., luting agents) that are needed to form the prosthesis.
