Nuala Cowan & Richard Hinton of the Geography department regularly integrate the open source mapping platform, OpenStreetMap into the curriculum for their introductory undergraduate Geographical Information Systems (GIS) & Cartography classes, -traditionally the domain of proprietary desktop software and data. They have sought to expand the traditional curriculum, and expose students to various open source software, web based platforms, and data collection initiatives, specifically in a service-learning environment.
+
+
The Mapping Challenge
+
In spring 2013, classes collaborated with the American Red Cross to map disaster prone communities in both Colombia and Indonesia. Using high-resolution satellite imagery, GW Geography students remotely traced road and building infrastructure, data that was subsequently field validated by domestic chapters of the Red Cross. In fall 2013 they worked on another collaborative project in conjunction with USAID and the Open Cities Project at the World Bank. Once again, students mapped street level infrastructure, this time, in the city of Kathmandu, Nepal. Field partner for this collaboration was a non-profit called Kathmandu Living Labs (KLL). KLL then performed OSM Patrol Sessions (Data Quality check and Validation) on the data created by the students (and others) for Kathmandu. Richard and Nuala’s classes have continued to work on collaborations in recent semesters. In Spring 2014 students traced infrastructure in the Philippines in conjunction with the GeoCenter at USAID, and in Summer 2014 students worked once again with the American Red Cross to trace buildings in Harare, Zimbabwe.
+
+
Our Workflow
+
The instructors used the Tasking Manager tool to outline the study area (which is determined by our partners), and partition it for tracing. Each student is given a quota of nodes to trace.
+
+
What we discovered
+
The collaborative mapping initiatives at GWU Geography have been exclusively disaster related to date, as this coincides with the research interests of the faculty involved. We believe this type of instructional module/assignment is applicable to many disciplines and teaching scenarios, and the objective of the TeachOSM resource is to open that possibility to these other fields, in a comprehensive user friendly way.

“DC Great Streets: A Street-level Survey Using OpenStreetMap”
+
+
Background
+
+
Conducting a street-level survey is a great way to get students acquainted with local land
+ use and land cover while learning important technical skills in the
+ OpenStreetMap environment. The objective of a survey is to make
+ a field-level determination of how the property or building is being used, create a
+ geo-located photo survey of the streetscape, and add those features to OpenStreetMap. In
+ the paragraphs below, we discuss the rationale for a street-level survey, outline the
+ basic mapping activities, and offer pointers for your street-level survey.
+
+
Rationale
+
+
In late 2014, MappingDC began a collaboration with the DC Great Streets
+ program to conduct
+a street-level survey in the twelve DC Great Streets corridors. The DC Great Streets
+program dispenses capital improvement grants to small businesses in these corridors to
+boost neighborhood economic resilience and help create lively urban centers around the city.
+Once a month, MappingDC hosts a mapping party in or along one of the corridors where we
+gather data in the field, upload, and edit the data in OpenStreetMap. The project is
+evolving with an emphasis on creating service learning opportunities for young adults that
+meet the needs of the DC Great Streets program.
+
+
Conducting your own street-level survey
+
+
Tools you’ll need
+
+
+
+
Mapillary: To create the streetview, we use Mapillary, a
+lightweight app that you add to your smartphone. So, before you get started, download and
+install Mapillary. Also review the tips and techniques on the Mapillary page so you take good, usable photos.
+
+
+
Field Papers: We use Field Papers to make a paper map of the streets, which
+we annotate in the field. Print out large-scale maps of your area of interest so you can
+annotate liberally and legibly. There is a very good Field Papers how-to on the
+OpenStreetMap wiki which shows how to
+use Field Papers for field data collection.
+
+
+
+
Workflow
+
The workflow:
+
+
+
Conduct field work
+
Return to base and begin editing in OpenStreetMap
+
Upload photos to Mapillary site
+
Review work for completeness and accuracy
+
+
+
Form teams for field work:
+
+
Two teams of two or three people, one team on each side of the street. One person records
+basic information about the property or building (e.g. name, address, phone, website, etc.),
+ the second person records takes photos. A third person is useful to take supplemental notes,
+ help navigate, but not essential.
+
+
+
Editing process
+
+
+
+
Trace building outlines as necessary. There are often multiple businesses in a building
+so enter each business as a point and give it its own address.
+
+
+
The Great Streets program has a simple rating system to help determine which properties
+qualify for assistance. Mappers tag each property with a rating, which the DC Great
+Streets program can use to assess property condition. You should refer to the
+building condition page on the
+OSM wiki for help in tagging building conditions.
+
+
+
Follow the instructions on the Mapillary page for uploading your photos from your phone
+to the Mapillary site.
+
+
+
+
Lessons Learned
+
MappingDC and DC Great Streets program are still working on how to standardize the tagging
+scheme for building conditions so that they are useful to the program. We’ve also learned
+that some photos are not usable because they are blurry, too dark, washed out, or taken at
+a bad angle. We’re working on developing field techniques that will make for more consistently
+usable photo quality.
+Tactically, teams of three seem to work best, but plan on at least two per team.
See also Elliott Plack’s diary entry
+on how he created a street-level survey on bicycle.

Georgia Avenue Youth Ambassadors Mapping Project
+
+
+
+
The Backstory
+
In July-August 2014, members of MappingDC worked with about 20 students ages 12-18 in Washington, DC to map out Georgia Avenue, a major commercial corridor in a largely lower-income part of town.
+The idea was to collect data on businesses so local groups and citizens can use it, while at the same time teaching the kids new skills and getting them engaged in their community while seeing it from a new viewpoint through geography and mapping. By the end, the students added almost 300 businesses to OpenStreetMap along the street and learned about geography and mapping.
+
+
The Partners
+
The project is part of the city’s Summer Youth Program, where young people work with local nonprofits on their projects that benefit the community. The nonprofit in this case is MOMIE’s TLC, which teaches minority students about local history, social justice, entrepreneurship, business skills and such. Part of their summer curriculum is to work with two local nonprofits, the Georgia Avenue Business Association (GABA) and the Georgia Avenue Community Development Task Force, on a biennial business survey, where they track what businesses exist and what local residents want, then have community meetings to discuss the survey and the mapping data that was collected.
+Previously the survey and data was just on the Task Force’s website, so it wasn’t very easy for people to find or use it – we figured, why not put this data they’re already collecting in a place where it’s more accessible and anybody around the world can use, while at the same time getting local kids involved – OpenStreetMap!
+
+
The Workflow
+
Buildings for many of the areas around Georgia Avenue were missing, so Tasking Manager was used to help subdivide the area, and help volunteers target the missing buildings.
+Volunteers helped add buildings along the avenue and elsewhere in the area, so we had a good base for the students to use.
+Andrew and Steven met with the Youth Ambassadors and organizers and gave a presentation on OpenStreetMap, with a brief demo of the system. They were excited to use it.
+Then came the actual business information. The nonprofits developed forms for the students to use, and they went out to collect that data. Having done this multiple times in the past, the nonprofits had good forms and steps worked out already. (Along the way, the students also spoke with business owners about entrepreneurship and business skills, and refined an “elevator speech,” as part of their curriculum.) The students also collected some info on the building structures and facades, which the businesses can use to apply for “Great Streets” revitalization grants from the city government.
+For the data entry into OSM, Andrew, Steven, Brandon and Richard met with the students at a community center to help them enter the data they collected back into OpenStreetMap. After some compuer struggles (more on that below) we got the students logins and they started to add the data they had collected.
+
+
Results
+
The students mapped at least 268 places, including local businesses, restaurants, fire stations, offices, salons, etc. We expect there are more now the project is done. About 7 students were registered on OpenStreetMap. One student even started mapping mailboxes on the street on her own, outside of the project. We are thinking about more interaction in the future with them, like other community mapping sessions.
+The data was also used to create a poster-sized map for a meeting of the Georgia Avenue Community Development Task Force, where local residents will discuss business and development needs. The Youth Ambassadors presented on their project and received a standing ovation, and the maps were printed and used in community conversations during the meeting.

The Backstory
+
+
For Northern Virginia Community College GIS Day, we decided to plan a mapathon incorporating National Geographic’s “The Future of Food” theme. We planned to map Farmers Markets in Virginia using OpenStreetMap. While we were able to find long/lat information for Farmers Markets in Virginia which students could add to OSM, we also wanted to show students that they could go out to their local Farmers Markets and gather information to be uploaded to OSM using field papers.
+
+
The Mapping Challenge
+
+
The first step was to print a map from the field papers website which would include the location of a local Farmers Market. Once the map was printed, a NOVA instructor was able to write information directly onto the printed map including street address and names of buildings in the same area as the Farmers Market.
+
+After the information was gathered, the paper map was converted to a jpeg file and then uploaded using the field papers website. Once the map was uploaded, information was easily added to OSM.
+
+
The Workflow
+
+
Because our participants were not actually going to use field papers for this event, the workflow only involved an instructor and a family member assistant! If field papers had been part of the event, a map atlas would have been printed and distributed to participants ahead of time.
+
+
Stumbling Blocks
+
+
Creating an atlas using field papers took some time to master, but the process was relatively simple.
+Make sure that you follow the instructions for the correct type of file that can be uploaded using field papers or your map will not upload.
+
+
Results
+
+
With three simple pictures, we were able to show students how easy it is to work in the field and add the most accurate information to OSM.
