Sharp is faster, has better support and is well documented.

I suspect that author used it because jimp has no binary dependencies, or any dependencies for that matter.

BTW. There is not much to write, if you use sharp its easy enough: https://sharp.pixelplumbing.com/en/stable/api-composite/
