For this purpose, we have applied\n different instruments for assessing the awareness of\n students of the importance of testing, as well as their\n knowledge of testing. The instruments are used in the\n courses of our pilot study in two phases, namely the\n baseline phase (before we started using out outputs) and the\n validation phase (after applying our outputs). We have\n developed three different instruments for this purpose: a\n rubric, a questionnaire and diagnostic assignments.\n </Typography>\n <Typography gutterBottom>\n Thanks to the questionnaire and the diagnostic assignment,\n we can check whether there are some differences between\n students' self-assessment and a more objective assessment of\n their quality awareness. The rubric allows us to observe the\n evolution of the students throughout the course and we can\n check when there are changes in the behaviour of the\n students (e.g. improvement in the quality of their code).\n <ul>\n <li>\n Rubric: it allows teachers from the different\n courses which are involved in the pilots to assess\n each assignment submitted by the students in terms\n of quality. It consists of 10 items (e.g.,\n modularity, documentation, etc.) in a 4-Likert\n scale. All partners used this rubric in the baseline\n stage and are applying it during the validation\n stage. Thanks to this rubric, all students that\n participate in the project are assessed in the same\n way. To collect data in a homogenous format, the we\n have developed a web-based version of the rubric.\n </li>\n <li>\n Questionnaire: it allows us to know the perception\n of the students regarding the importance of quality\n issues when they programming. The questionnaire was\n the same for all the courses and was sent at the end\n of the term.\n </li>\n <li>\n Diagnostic assignments: the goal of such assignments\n is to observe which is the actual awareness and\n knowledge of quality issues of the students. Because\n each course is different, each lecturer in charge\n decided the questions and the format of her\n diagnostic assignment in detail, but all these\n assignments have a similar form and intention.\n </li>\n </ul>\n </Typography>\n\n <Typography variant=\"h4\" gutterBottom>\n Summary results of the Open Universiteit Nederland (OU)\n </Typography>\n <Typography gutterBottom>\n The course Advanced object-oriented programming is the\n second programming course and covers the more advanced OO\n topics: inheritance, abstract classes and interfaces,\n generic and enumeration types, error types, debugging,\n testing, robust programming, concurrency, GUI programming\n and MVC and the Observer pattern. After the topic robust\n programming, students make a hand-in assignment of 15 study\n hours concerning correct functionality, robustness and\n testing. Each student's solution is accessed in detail and\n students receive detailed feedback based on a rubric. <br />{\" \"}\n <br />\n We did a baseline and a validation measurement. The baseline\n concerned the course as it has been given since 2018. About\n 80 students were involved. The validation (February 2023 to\n April 2023) concerned the course with an instructional\n design based on the procedural guidance: contracts and how\n to use them are explained and trained by exercises. Again,\n about 80 students registered for the course.\n <br /> <br />\n Based on the QPED rubric used, using a 4-points scale, in\n both measurements we observed a positive redistribution of\n students across the various score ranges. Where in the\n baseline phase the majority of students achieved scores of\n 3, in the validation phase there is a decrease in the\n proportion of students obtaining scores of 2 and 3 while\n there is a significantly higher percentage of students\n attaining the highest score of 4. This pattern recurs in the\n majority of the items, in particular test traceability, test\n completeness and robustness. If\n you need additional information, please write to us in order\n to provide you with an in-depth report.\n </Typography>\n\n <Typography variant=\"h4\" gutterBottom>\n Summary results of the Phillips-Universität Marburg (UMR)\n </Typography>\n <Typography gutterBottom>\n The Phillips-Universität Marburg is a classical full\n university. For the pilot study in the QPED project we have\n chosen the Bachelor course Object-Oriented Programming (9\n ECTS), which is part of several study programs and usually\n followed by 170-200 (exams taken) students in the first or\n second semester. The baseline measurement for our diagnostic\n test (part of the mandatory exam) was performed in the run\n of 2020/21. For our student self-evaluation by means of a\n questionnaire and the rubric-based assessment of exercises,\n the baseline measurement took place in 2021/22. The\n validation measurement was in all cases made in the winter\n term 2022/23. After the first baseline measurement, already\n small adjustments have been made to the course in terms of\n initially introducing the TILE approach for some exercises.\n Thereafter, in winter 22/23 the course has been adjusted\n further, widely using TILE and the MASS feedback system.\n Some of the assignments were also rewritten to stipulate a\n step-wise solution approach, following a simplified form of\n the procedural guidance. <br /> <br />\n In comparison, the rubric-based ratings for the different\n concepts are similar for all assignments in both the\n baseline and validation runs. Consistently, the concepts\n “correctness” and “readability” were rated higher in the\n validation. For other concepts, in particular “test\n traceability” and “test completeness”, the trend varies\n between assignments. We expect that that the use of the\n rubric suffered from the fluctuation of student tutors who\n filled-in the rubric over the years. In our questionnaire,\n students rate their understanding of different\n quality-related concepts as more positive in the validation\n run. Lastly, we performed a diagnostic test, i.e., an\n assignment targeting the student knowledge w.r.t. software\n quality in the mandatory written exam, which was completed\n over three years by 180, 200 and 170 students, respectively.\n Here, we found a clear positive trend. It covers basic programming concepts (e.g. syntax,\n variables, conditionals, loops, functions, etc.) and some\n topics related to Bioinformatics, such as math and\n visualization libraries. Regarding the assessment policy, PB\n has five graded assignments (GA) that students submit\n throughout the semester. <br /> <br />\n We did a baseline and a validation measurement. The\n baseline, with 144 students, was conducted from 16/02/22 to\n 24/06/22 and concerned the course as it has been given since\n 2020. During the validation (28/09/22 - 29/01/23), the\n course was adapted to the TILE approach and used feedback\n tools. In this occasion, 222 students registered for the\n course. <br /> <br />\n In the light of the results, we can see that the use of the\n TILE approach and feedback tools was effective in order to\n improve students' skills related to quality software. The\n improvement was especially high for “output correctness”\n (+22.4% students with score 4 in validation's diagnostic\n test in comparison with baseline's diagnostic test) and\n “program robustness” (+28.6%). Likewise, the questionnaire\n suggests a positive impact of artefacts implemented in the\n project, since more than 72% students strongly agreed with\n testing is as important as programming and using tests\n improves the quality of the software. The\n instruction classes contained, besides ungraded exercises\n for practice, graded assignments which contributed to the\n final mark. For the instruction classes a user manual was\n provided with a simplified, practical version of the\n Procedural Guidance. <br /> <br />\n In all categories (Rubric, Questionnaire and final marks),\n we see positive trends: the QPED contributions were\n appreciated and improvements are noticeable. The differences\n were not very large: teaching at TU/e involved already\n aspects of the QPED approach like specification and example\n test runs, so this is consistent with expectations.
