Typst: Turn off page numbering

Description

I have an incredibly simple Quarto document using Typst. I need to turn off page numbering and I can find no way of effectively doing that either in YAML front matter or using Typst #set commands.

Does anyone know of a straightforward way to accomplish this simple and common requirement?

No opinion either way whether it should be a feature of Quarto. The invocation to change it in your document is

```{=typst}
#set page(numbering: none)
```

You can only do this in the body of your document, can't use include-in-header for this, because page numbering is being applied by article()

@gordonwoodhull This does not work for the first page which includes the title, etc. because the template sets numbering.

Apologies, I tried it without a title.

I guess once there is content on a page, if you try to change the page, then you get a new page.

Since there's no way to change this simple option without changing the template, I guess that does motivate a feature. Not a strong opinion, though, and we'd have to check what the other formats do.

I believe for docx that's controlled by the document template (the default template has no page numbering).
And LaTeX is way less structured, i.e., including the command in the header works.

So, if an option is added, it would be only for LaTeX and Typst.

I would suggest rather than an option to actually develop partials for the Typst format to allow more control on the different parts.

I believe that what @cwickham started, by extending it to other part would be better than adding a "numbering" option:

If there is a "layout" (or whatever its name) partial controlling all (at least page settings) or a part of the following elements would allow simple and more advanced changes (no need to copy/paste the whole template as it is currently the case):

@gordonwoodhull I believe update to Pandoc 3.6 will solve this as we will update the template to support new page-numbering configuration from Pandoc: jgm/pandoc@d5d2821

Yeah Pandoc always had differences in template variable they support. 🤷‍♂️ So we do also have difference in support because of that. We could try anticipate support, but someone opened an issue already for LaTeX template in Pandoc:

• Support page numbering in LaTeX template jgm/pandoc#10380

So we could PR there if we want to deal with that.

I was playing around making a footer and found an empty one removed the page number - applied to the script from @mcanouil:

Perhaps. But then I wouldn't benefit if - or when - quarto upgrades enable things like page numbering and title page options in the pre-amble or _quarto.yml

If you enable this on your template, there is no reason to try to upgrade from Quarto.

Quarto only provides a default, as such it won't cover all customisation you might want.
It's also why there is an extension mechanism which help provide templates.

Absolutely agree that we should have finer-grained partials for Typst, and footer should be one of them.

It's a young format which didn't inherit the same structure as our LaTeX templates.

Thanks for the link to the catalogue., I'll look at extensions.

Until two days ago I had never head of, or looked at, typst, I'll better move cautiously with implementing templates if I want to get a decent night of sleep.
