Consider making synchronisation with users work when app is not on the foreground

We're having to run the gRPC server as part of the activity lifecycle (in a thread), which restricts the server to run only when the app is on the foreground.

Making the server run on the background is unreliable, but it might be possible to implement it in such a way that most scenarios and devices are supported.
