Bookdown/Topics Thread

hey all -- it sounded like there was some interest around targeting a bookdown collection of best practices as the output of the working group.

starting a thread here to brainstorm topics. @rpodcast, please let me know if there is a different forum to post this type of thread.

a few topics I heard mentioned on the call:

• how to determine when shiny is the right tool (e.g. vs. a markdown document)
• requirements gathering/scope management/expectation setting
• packaging/bundling apps (e.g. golem)

a few others of interest to me to get the discussion started:

• code & environment management (e.g. version control & renv)
• testing (shinytest/shinytest2/crrry)
• validation (opportunities to leverage/extend valtools-style approaches)

curious to hear what others are thinking. this is could be a very broad topic with many great resources already freely available. identifying the proper scope of topics will be key.

I agree with all the points above and would echo "when shiny is the right tool". I've been doing a lot more work with interactive markdown recently (and so naturally I'm very excited for Quarto!)

testing would be a big one for me, along with CI/CD. David Granjon has started to combine the approaches in https://github.com/Novartis/shinyValidator.
