This problem causes the solution to be ill-posed as there is no unique solution on the amount of dispersion produced by the BCs. It has been observed that the outlet boundary can act as an inflow for dispersion and therefore produce additional volume.
It does not invalidate continuity of mass or momentum: only the relative volumes of the phases may be not preserved.
