At present I don't have a Raspberry-Pi, but any event that would be a learning curve for me. You can use this distro build the gem (possibly on MacOS, but probably on most linux distributions). There should be a way of using jruby-complete if you can't install jruby. I have seen that someone used rbenv to install jruby, on debian linux I just extract the tarball in /opt and use update-alternatives to create the symbolic links (Note update-alternatives is a easy way to control the version java you are using).
