I like how Intrigue creates the blue notes from an article DOI, etc. I was surprised that in the .intrigue file, when I open it in a text editor, all of the references in that article are there in the underlying json. I don't know whether this happens for all articles, but it could be cool to have the ability to create related notes from this hidden data.

Hi! This is definitely an interesting idea! It would be useful for, say, conducting a literature review. In the future I might be able to add an “explore neighborhood” function to literature nodes. In the mean time, I’ve been making a tool specifically for gathering and filtering papers for a review, so this functionality may come after I finish similar things in that app. Please stay tuned :)

As for the technical details, I think this can be credited to the fact that Citation.js is using CrossRef api, which provides reference data for some papers (but not all). I am looking into combining that api with the Semantic Scholar api to make reference tracing more reliable.

I've just published a prototype for Snowball, a tool for doing literature reviews using the snowballing method. Currently it supports finding related papers using the Semantic Scholar API. Feel free to check it out!
