Purposeful (or conscious) action — action that is directed at attaining certain ends.
A beating heart is a necessary action for man to live but he does not consciously control the muscles to pump blood around his body. But man picking an apple off a tree requires firstly reason to identify a tree and his arm and how to reach for this apple to achieve his goal of acquiring an apple.
