I'd like to add support for both ATMEGA320/4809 but I've not done anything like this before. Can you point me to to some PR, patch or commit where I can see how to add new MCUs to the library?

I am also on the same boat. I am trying to learn gnu tools like autoconf/automake/diff/patch etc.. to get some sense on where to start modifying the code. As for the patches, you can check out the below link. http://savannah.nongnu.org/patch/?group=avr-libc
More specifically, the patch 9543 is about adding support to new avr chips, I believe.
