Could it work with lists?
For example:

- a = 10
- b = 20
- = a+b

It could in theory, but this is a can of worms I'm not sure I want to open. The more expressions this matches, the higher the chance of an accidental match. Specifically I'd like to avoid a situation where you cannot use a = anymore without it being interpreted, hence the limitations around what is a literate-calc expression and what isn't.
