Investigate high memory usage for large simulations

Not particularly a problem when running on a server with a large memory capacity, but before the opacities array is even allocated, memory usage can jump to 100+ GBs for a 600,000 wavelength grid simulation with 40,000 lines. I suspect we're doing something wrong in set up but not sure.
