New term

  • Submitter: Ian Engelbrecht
  • Efficacy Justification (why is this term necessary?): I'm often coming up against cases where I need to represent a full species name but excluding authorship. This is often refered to as the canonical name. dwc:scientificName doesn't fit the need as it is intended to include the author.
  • Demand Justification (name at least two organizations that independently need this term): I'm currently working with the team at Plazi on their API and they provide a canonical name. I'm sure there are many other examples.
  • Stability Justification (what concerns are there that this might affect existing implementations?): None, if anything it would add clarity to what scientificName should be used for.
  • Implications for dwciri: namespace (does this change affect a dwciri term version)?: No

Proposed attributes of the new term:

  • Term name (in lowerCamelCase for properties, UpperCamelCase for classes): dwc:canonicalName
  • Term label (English, not normative): Canonical Name
  • Organized in Class (e.g., Occurrence, Event, Location, Taxon): Taxon
  • Definition of the term (normative): A full taxon name but excluding authorship, which can be represented with dwc:scientificNameAuthorship. Useful for providing full species and infraspecific taxon names.
  • Usage comments (recommendations regarding content, etc., not normative): Recommended to include dwc:scientificNameAuthorship when used, and does not preclude dwc:scientificName in the same record.
  • Examples (not normative): Roptrocerus typographi with dwc:scientificNameAuthorship = (Györfi, 1952). Other examples should follow those for dwc:scientificName.
  • Refines (identifier of the broader term this term refines; normative): dwc:scientificName
  • Replaces (identifier of the existing term that would be deprecated and replaced by this term; normative): N/A
  • ABCD 2.06 (XPATH of the equivalent term in ABCD or EFG; not normative):

I'm not certain whether infraspecific ranks should be dropped from plant names to form a canonical name, perhaps someone can advise on that.
