when creating a new vm, what's the difference between "emulate" and "virtualize" in terms of the default settings (with the base being "virtualize" or v2.4.1)? |

In v2.4.1, it defaults to "virtualize" when your host CPU and target CPU matches UNLESS you check the "force slower emulation" box in the settings. Since this led to confusion, we made it an explicit choice at the beginning (and you can change it later on in the vm settings). |

Can anyone point me the best default CPUs for the following systems, assuming that I can get faster and better performance from them? I'm on M1 MacBook Air and UTM 3.0.0 MSDOS 6.22/Windows 3.11: I'm using Pentium 2, and I see no problem at all with it |

The QEMU "default" CPU usually gives the fastest emulation performance (unless you choose a very old CPU). What "default" means is dependent on the VM architecture and system you choose. For your VMs I recommend you change all of them to default CPU. Windows XP 32-bit runs best on a x86_64 bit i440fx system. |

@conath so far all my machines booted just fine, I still haven't measured performance but they seem to be normal. I just havent tested Win 98 and XP yet. I had trouble booting Win 10 x64 but I switched from QXL secondary to primary and it fixed for me. And yeah this one is helluva slow, but I don't have a serious use for that machine, except for a yearly usage limited to a few minutes just to get and export new certificates for my work. |

I believe so. It runs very smoothly, 60FPs I would say. The menus are a bit laggy but it might just be a cursor/UI glitch. |

@conath thanks for that insight. I'll report back about my machines after I try them with these changes. But I actually have Windows 11 ARM installed and running (although the store and some apps don't run unless I replace them with x86 counterparts). Updating my list of guests, M1 MacBook Air (2020), macOS 12.2:
All running just fine, except, obviously, for W10 as expected. It was initially Haswell (same as previous Intel Mac) then Skylake and now Default. I decided to use qemu32 for XP (previously it was Westmere), and the two Pentium flavors for Win 98 and DOS each, for game perf. related reasons (and because system was unable to correctly identify the model when using default or qemu32, Win 98 was identifying it as a PII while DOS/Win 3.11 was unable to identify). I think I'm fine with these now and settled for it. |

Thank you for fast response. It just doesn't turn on, but it doesn't make a mistake either. I'm trying to install ubuntu server, I didn't even want the cloud-init, but it's the easiest and most tested for just downloading and using. But it doesn't start at all. |

I suggest you use the previous version 2.4.1 which works fine for virtualizing Ubuntu Server. You can install multiple versions of UTM next to each other, just rename the |

I'm trying to use the beta because qemu goes "crazy" in memory, a memory that doesn't make sense for what's running. For example, if the machine says it is using 100MB on the activity monitor, 2.5GB appears. |

@dan-developer can you identify your mac model (M1? Intel? year? Pro or Air?) and did previous stable versions (like latest 2.4.1) worked fine on it before trying out the beta? On my end the beta works fine for my M1 Mac. |

This looks like the VMDK corruption error we have seen before. Please convert to QCOW2 before you import the file into UTM to avoid this. |

I installed today many times Win11 with the 2 types of files (vhdx & qcow2) to test this corruption problem...It's true that QCOW2 doesn't crash but, when VHDX crash, I reset UTM and starts with no corruption🤷♂️...It's seems to be a memory problem maybe, I noticed that it starts well with only UTM app running in my Mac (no other apps running). I will test the same tomorrow with Win10 (install VHDX & QCOW2) to check for any coincidence. |

Is this maybe something that can be done during VM creation? Perhaps if it sees that its a VMDK have it auto-convert? Parallels does something similar and would get rid of the user requirement for qemu-img (& homebrew). |
