It should be possible to change the root password during the deployment process of a linux vm with the help of openvm tools because our customers order the VM in self-service and provide the root password there

Thank @pirminjanka, I have opened an internal ticket to track your request. As it involves some security-related concerns, we need an internal evaluation before providing further answers. Once there are results, I will update this thread.
@pirminjanka As a workaround, you could leverage our customization script feature and run your pre-defined script to change root password. For details please refer to https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/74880
