Stem position relative to origin

Is their a specific reason why common stems are centered on the glyph origin and those from the Medieval and Renaissance range are not (at least in Bravura)? I would expect the latter to show the same behaviour, especially because stems in mensural notation usually are connected to the midpoint of the notehead.
