Per discussion in https://matrixlogs.bakkot.com/WHATWG/2024-04-25 and https://matrixlogs.bakkot.com/WHATWG/2024-04-26, it seems like "author" is really trying to refer to the concept of "deputy editor", referred to in https://whatwg.org/working-mode several times.

Aligning db.json and the script that writes to it (I think that's how it works?) with the prose in Working Mode seems like a good idea to me, to clear up the fact that those listed under the currently-named "author" title are those that actually have real editor-like powers over a given Living Standard.

Does anyone object?

This seems okay to me as an initial improvement. We might want to do more at some point to reconcile terminology across all the WHATWG documents. E.g., we have a rather prominent MAINTAINERS.md file in whatwg/meta.
