Note

This role is only for students who have previously participated in Wordplaypen or have sufficient knowledge of the project to help guide newcomers.

So, you want to mentor in the community? That's great! There's a great need for guidance.

Unlike the other roles in the community, mentorship has a broad scope, with many different distinct activities involved. What binds them together is the goal of helping others get their work done. It is crucial that you teach responsibility for each of these seriously; others depend on you to model our code of conduct fully in order for the rest of the community to work.

Here are your responsibilities:

Support

Every contributor depends on you to ensure their success.

  • Supervise and support up to five contributors. This means being available to help, provide guidance, connect with others in the community, encourage them, and give them feedback on their work. I want you to know that your goal here is to ensure others can achieve their goals. You're a resource to help them work better.

  • Answer questions on Discord when you have the answers.

  • Ensure cross-team collaboration. Designers should consult with developers on feasibility and help them find developers to work with. Developers should partner with designers, verifiers, and localizers to ensure that their implementation reflects the goals of the design and that they work together.

  • Organize tutorials. When you identify a need for learning, find an expert who can teach on a topic (including maybe you) and organize a learning event (at the meetup or another time).

Improve

We depend on you to identify improvements to the project since you are closest to determining what's working and what's not.

  • Identify process improvements. In your time, please gather feedback from contributors about what's working and what's not. Report changes to our process as a GitHub issue to improve communication, collaboration, learning, and productivity.
