We want to be careful about licensing, so these will likely need to be uniquely created for the picoTracker or already available ones that can be distributed and a creative commons commercial use allowed license.
Also I don't know much about licensing, but if I start recording samples myself from various bits of hardware (TR-606, RD-9, synths, etc), would they be safe to use and distribute?

Sorry I don't know the answer to that. But all good, I have much more prosaic samples in mind that 💯 definitely will be safe to use and distribute :-)
It would be helpful for new users to have a set of factory samples (as examples for working in required format) and tracks to get them started.
