PHP 5.6+ compatibility release

Fork of the master branch (v2.x) that provides PHP 5.6+ compatibility for projects that need it.
May not always be 100% in sync with the v2.x release.

First stable release, restricted to PHP 7.1+

Initial public release based on the private repository fork from GitLab.
