10/9 1:00-2:20pm 356B Barrows Hall ####Attendees Nisreen, Jonathan, Carlo, Jong-kai, Tong, Vedant, Jorrit, Dav (part)
####Agenda
- Growing Interest?
- Big Ideas/Oct 15 Seminar
- Review Issues
- Discuss Island Biodiversity by MacArthur and Wilson (1967)
- Review/Discuss Proposals
####Review
- more social problem than being limited by technology
- person before algorithm
- add nano-bios
####Big Ideas
- Oct 15 presentation at Hacking Measurement
- Nov 12 3-page proposal for Big Ideas
- going forward with Big Ideas as a way to frame our idea
####Article
- Insular Biogeography good summary of key points (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insular_biogeography)
- Factors affecting biodiversity: island size, age, etc
####Proposals
- which subset of species are we looking at? birds (well documented though migration an issue?)?
- need to normalize across different attributes of islands (very complicated problem not able to solve in 2 months)
- just compare biodiversity among islands
- how to find open data, dark data, and missing data
- estimate with island size and other factors (island biogeography)
- github pages website and javascript, and static data to begin with
- add social context
- look at birds in particular
####Notes
- Not Berkeley time!
- share knowledge and collaborate
- build tool that allow you to see difference between what we think we know about a certain island and what is actually available
- few different islands with people associated with those islands (not just specific to one)
- idea to have consumer report on how complete is the species list (check list) of a certain island
- progress bar for completeness on "open data", "dark data", "missing data"
- tools for "open data" (not easy but it's there called effechecka.org)
- "dark data" contacting appropriate scientists/researchers
- "missing data" on island biogeography (won't change until extinction) -- function that allows us to estimate number of species (look at parameters being area, climate, etc... to predict missing data)
####Actions
- Big Ideas Nov. 12 (Nisreen)
- Oct 15 seminar presentation (Jong-kai)
- Think of ideas for proposals
- Read about island biogeography
- Look into Leaflet js for maps (Carlo/Tong)
- Gather open data for islands (Vedant)
- Graph/estimate completeness for islands (Nisreen)
- Set up page and comparison table (Jonathan)
- Define 100% completeness
- Information List
- Proposal
