About the portable version

Nick Korotysh edited this page Mar 2, 2024 · 1 revision

Technically there are no differences between portable and installer versions, even all binary files are the same (compare any checksums/hashes if you don't believe).

The only thing that makes the portable version portable - is the hidden file called "portable.txt" alongside the executable. It is not a strict requirement for that file to be hidden, I just decided to hide it to not confuse the users. The content of this file is not important (the file shipped with a portable version is just empty) and not read at all, only its existence is important. This file is just a "tag", the presence of which means "do not look into system-default settings storage (i.e. Windows Registry), look for (and write) settings into a file instead".

Note: actually one more filename is recognized as such tag - .portable (aka Unix-style hidden file).
