At the first startup, configure the Volume Rendering settings (open the setting interface by pressing ctrl+2 / Command ⌘ 2; Volume Rendering tab):

  1. Choose VTK GPU Ray Casting (if you have either a discrete or integrate GPUs);

  2. Set the default quality, interactive speed and surface smoothing settings according to your GPU specs (e.g., NVIDIA GeForce GTX970: quality to maximum, speed to 8 fps, surface smoothing on);

  3. Set the amount of your DRAM (e.g., NVIDIA GeForce GTX970: 4 GB). The GPU memory is usually reported in the system info. For linux, lunch one of these commands in the terminal: nvidia-smi (only NVIDIA gpu) or glxinfo | grep "Total available memory". For mac, navigate to System Information window from About This Mac.

  4. Setting the volume rendering settings is necessary.
