Tmux doesn't need to be currently attached if running in the background, will not show no current client error

You can use the -A option instead:

if [[ -z $TMUX ]]; then
    tmux new-session -A -s "$selected_name" -c "$selected"
    exit 0
fi

From tmux manpage:

The -A flag makes new-session behave like attach-session if session-name already exists
